realestate.com.au’s March 2026 feature explores the difference between owning the home you live in and building towards financial independence. Alongside Finder survey findings, it profiles InvestorKit client Vignesh Rajashekar.

Buying in markets beyond home

Vignesh, 27 and working in construction, began investing at 23. The article reports three freestanding houses in Adelaide, South Australia, Bundaberg, Queensland, and Wodonga, Victoria. The purchases were in the $500,000 to $600,000 range, with the portfolio reported at around $2 million.

He discussed the difficulty of buying in the Sydney locations where he wanted to live without taking on more debt than he felt comfortable managing. Investing elsewhere created a different way to begin, with assistance from InvestorKit founder Arjun Paliwal.

Defining the goal before the address

Finder’s survey placed financial independence ahead of home ownership as a measure of success among respondents overall. The report also notes differences between generations, rather than presenting one goal as universal.

Vignesh’s longer-term ambition was to develop enough income to reduce his reliance on full-time work. That was a goal described in the interview, not an income outcome already achieved by the reported portfolio.
